Nokia has opened its Mobile Core Early Access program to telecommunications providers and enterprises globally, offering a live hosted environment where participants can explore mobile-core capabilities and use cases before establishing their own test setups.

The program is intended to move network teams from demonstrations to hands-on evaluation. Nokia said it began the initiative in June with 30 companies and is now opening registration across the industry.

The hosted environment includes mobile network functions, radios and devices in an end-to-end setting, according to the company. Participants can examine how capabilities operate across cloud-native network functions, user interfaces and operational workflows. Nokia said the program will be regularly updated as new mobile-core capabilities and use cases become available.

For organizations considering new core-network technology, initial evaluation can require considerable coordination. A team may need access to network functions, compatible devices, radio equipment, test traffic and people from operations, engineering and business units before it can determine whether a new capability is relevant. Nokia is positioning its hosted environment as a way to reduce that early setup effort and give participants a basis for planning and deployment decisions.

The announcement specifically cites 5G Core, automation, analytics and network-exposure use cases. It does not list every feature available in the program or provide performance results from the initial group of participants. As a result, operators will still need to test the use cases that matter to their own network architecture, service portfolio and security controls.

The program’s relevance to IT automation lies in the evaluation workflow. Before a provider automates a network process or introduces a new cloud-native core function, it needs to understand dependencies, operating requirements and the effect on existing tools. A hosted test environment may make that assessment more accessible, but it does not substitute for production validation, integration testing or change management.

Nokia said the environment gives users visibility into operational workflows as well as technical components. That matters because mobile-core automation is typically not limited to one network function. Operations teams may need to align alarms, analytics, policy, service exposure and infrastructure management with their existing processes. The release does not describe integrations with specific third-party operations platforms, so prospective users should confirm how the program maps to their own systems.

For participants that need additional time, more flexibility or deeper integration with their environments, Nokia offers a paid option for extended evaluation, experimentation and validation. The company did not disclose pricing or the criteria for moving between the standard and paid options.

The practical benefit for a network team is the opportunity to explore emerging mobile-core technology without first building a complete initial lab. That could help shorten the discovery phase and bring technical and business stakeholders into the same evaluation process earlier. It does not mean an operator can bypass the work required to assess resilience, security, interoperability and operational readiness before deployment.

Nokia describes the program as a response to faster mobile innovation cycles and the increasing demand placed on networks by AI-driven services and enterprise applications. For IT and telecom leaders, the announcement is a new evaluation option rather than a general-availability product deployment. Its value will depend on the use cases a participant can test and on whether the hosted environment provides enough fidelity to inform a production decision.
