Advanced Micro Devices and Anthropic have entered into a major agreement worth tens of billions of dollars for artificial intelligence servers. This strategic deal strengthens AMD’s competitive positioning against market leader Nvidia while securing a massive infusion of computing infrastructure for Anthropic.
As part of the multi-year contract, Anthropic will purchase up to two gigawatts of AMD’s next-generation Instinct MI450 chips, with initial deployment expected to begin in the first half of 2027. Demonstrating its deep commitment to the partnership, AMD will also make its first direct financial investment in the AI research company, committing up to five billion dollars as key deployment milestones are met along the way.
“We have very much wanted to be a major part of their infrastructure,” AMD Chief Executive Lisa Su said, adding that engineering teams from both companies have already been working closely together for some time.
Currently, Anthropic distributes its intensive computing workloads across a range of hardware platforms, including Google tensor-processing units, Amazon Trainium chips, and Nvidia graphics processing units. Through this newly forged relationship, Anthropic plans to purchase AMD chips directly for its own facilities while leasing additional capacity through third-party cloud providers and specialized neoclouds. Both companies are already collaborating actively to locate and identify suitable data center facilities to host the hardware.
“You can’t just wake up one morning and say, ‘Oh, I want a gigawatt of compute tomorrow,’” Su said. “You actually have to plan, you know, 12, 18, 24 months in advance for what you want.”
To further support the rollout, AMD is negotiating to provide a financial backstop for Anthropic’s future data center leases. Large established technology vendors with strong credit profiles are increasingly stepping up to guarantee lease obligations or debt for growing AI firms, enabling those startups to secure capital on vastly improved terms. Google previously agreed to a similar backstop arrangement to assist Anthropic in accessing its tensor-processing units.
The alliance highlights AMD’s sustained effort to capture market share in the GPU sector as software developers actively seek alternatives to Nvidia. AMD has recently secured substantial deals with other high-profile AI developers, including OpenAI and Meta Platforms, sometimes offering financial incentives such as share warrants to win contracts.
Beyond hardware supply, the partnership incorporates a joint engineering initiative in which AMD will use Anthropic’s Claude AI models to refine and enhance the performance of its own chip technologies. Securing this long-term infrastructure remains vital for Anthropic, which recently experienced service outages and usage restrictions due to rapid customer growth. This transaction expands upon infrastructure commitments Anthropic secured earlier in the year with Amazon, Google, and SpaceX.
